Hello! We are Julie and Molly, a daughter and step-mother team that works oddly well together. Over the last 17 years that we have been a family, we have moved several times, built 3 houses, and become neighbors! We like to spend our time together doing the things that make us happy and surrounding ourselves with things and people we love. That is the inspiration for the Rustic Room.
We have a passion for projects, and especially repurposing. Some people see trash and junk – we see potential! We have never met a challenge we won’t tackle, and we find it our mission to do so without spending money. In fact, we are slightly obsessed with thrift stores and dumps.
Fortunately, we are married to 2 very supportive and handy husbands, They are generally drug into projects before they even know it, and the rest of the time they just sit back and laugh while they watch.
Julie: I would consider myself more of a free spirit and the thought of sitting in an office never appealed to me. Right out of high school I went to the Faux Finish Institute in Omaha. I was hired immediately by the company and had great on the job training and experience. I wasn’t satisfied with being only a painter and went back to school in between painting for a Bachelors of Art in Art History. Although I realize now that my degree was not the best choice career wise, I did take away a new appreciation for art and aesthetics. After we had kids, being a stay at home mom was not a choice for me, I felt it was necessary and I wouldn’t have it any other way! We have two busy little boys who are 4 and 18 months. Projects give me a sense of purpose and help act as a creative outlet while also getting to watch my boys grow. I love being able to do something that I am passionate about everyday.
Molly: For over a decade, I worked as a congressional staffer, managing a staff of very high energy professionals who made each day a new and exciting challenge. Although it was work that I loved, when we built a house, moved to the country and bought an elk hunting business that my husband spends months at a time out of state managing, we decided that it was time for me to be home with our 2 beautiful young girls who are now 8 and 12. The adjustment was hard at first, but I quickly realized it was just managing a different kind of high energy. Besides being a taxi driver, fast order cook, homework tutor, coach, and cheering section for many weekly sports, I am an organizing fanatic. Making lists and folding laundry give me a weird sense of peace. I have a hard time spending money on something that I know we can make, and most of the time, I know we can make it even better. Especially if we add metallic and shimmer to it!
We hope that we can inspire you to create a space that you love. Thanks for stopping by!!
